Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
An important political figure stated the attack made him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
